10/2/2010 - Fire Safety - R is for Roof

Per a new Florida fire safety code, maltese cross signs with the letter R in the center are being placed at the entrances to the clubhouse and all condo and apartment buildings.

The new Florida Fire Sign Law 69A-60.0081 requires that this sign to be placed outside the entrances of ground floor commercial and multi-unit residential buildings with light-frame truss type roof construction.

The sign indicates that the building has a wood frame truss supported roof and to firefighters this means that they should not walk on the roof if burning has occurred under the roof as the roof may collapse.

Additional signs in the law that do NOT apply to us are signs marked with the letter  "F" for structures with light-frame truss floor systems and signs marked with the letters "RF" for structures with light-frame truss floor and roof systems.

Click here for details on the new law.

Editorial comment - The fact that our roofs are constructed with wood framing is not something to be concerned about as this form of construction is typical for raised roofs.

Furthermore, the floors, ceilings, and all load bearing walls of the apartments and condos are steel reinforced concrete with steel used for the framing of the non load bearing walls. And finally, all apartment and condo units are protected by fire sprinklers in the units.

So if you want to worry about something, I suggest you look elsewhere.
