The cause is water slowly draining from the tank and lowering the float. When the float reaches its critical height, it switches on the water. Common causes include the following.
- The flapper is leaking.
The refill tube from the fill valve is too far in the overflow tube causing the refill tube to siphon
The flapper chain is too tight and is holding the flapper up.
The spud gasket (big rubber washer under drain seat) is leaking.
