3/27/2015 - Trash in Condo Hallways

This week a number of condo residents received a phone call or letter regarding leaving trash in the condo hallways.

Per our rules and regulations, "Stair-ways, driveways, halls and all other portions of the Common Elements must, at all times, be kept free of obstruction. No garbage cans, supplies, or other articles shall be placed in the pathway, halls, stairways, walkways or parking areas."

As for the why of this rule, there are two reasons. The first reason is that obstructions are a violation of the fire code because they could interfere with people safely exiting the building in the event of a fire. The second reason is that the hallways belong to all of us and other than nothing, there is probably no limit to what some people would store in the hallways if they were allowed to.

This is wrong on so many levels. Not only is this trash blocking the hallway and unsightly looking, but garbage can be a major contributor to attracting and spreading bugs and worse. Yes, I understand that one might not want something like this in their unit. But that is all the more reason it should go directly to the compactor and not be staged in the hallway.

That said, if you see trash in the hallway, please do everyone a favor and report the problem along with the unit number by calling the Property Manager or anonymously by using the Speak Up section of this web site.
