|The AC units in the condos and townhomes will be 10 years old this summer. So is it time to replace yours? |
If your AC unit is working fine, there is no real reason to replace it since the original units are high efficiency SEER 14 units and new units are at best only slightly more efficient e.g. SEER 16.
But come the day that your unit stops working and major work is needed to get it back in operation e.g. fixing a leaking coil or replacing the compressor, you will probably be better off replacing it than having it fixed.
That said, I decided to replace ours now to avoid having to deal with a replacement in the Summer, when the service techs are stretched thin and being without AC is not really an option.
Wanting to keep things simple for our condo I decided to stay with a Trane system and selected the XR16 outside unit (4TTR6024J1000A) and the XB TMM5 inside unit (TMM5A0B24M21SA w/ 5kW heat strips) and had it installed by Prestige Air Conditioning Systems for $3,327.00 complete including tax. And it only took them four hours from the time they arrived until the time they left.
