How Things Work

Using The Trash Compactors
(More Than You Should Have To Know To Throw Out The Trash)
by Peter Schulz

There are two trash compactors in Green Cay Village. One is for the use of the apartment residents and the other is for the use of the condominium residents. Both work the same with the exception of the door lock on the compactor.

  • Apartment Compactor - The code for the door lock is 543 i.e. press button 5 then 4 then 3 and then open the door. You have to push the handle down quite hard as it sticks just before opening.
  • Condominium Compactor - There is no door lock. All you need to do is open the door, throw your trash in, and close the door. When the door is closed it presses a switch causing the compactor to cycle.

The compactors do  not compact each time they are used. In fact, they only compact after the door has been opened and closed three times. So don't worry if it doesn't compact when you use it. On the other hand, if you want to force it to compact, open and close the door three times.

If the compactor does not seem to be working, pull out on the stop button since once it is depressed for any reason, it stays depressed until it is manually pulled out. In fact it's a good idea to pull the stop out each time you use the compactor to assist the next person using the compactor as they may not be aware of this "feature".

Compactor Use on Thursdays - Both the apartments and the condo compactors are removed by Waste Management Services every Thursday to empty them. So if you can, please plan on on not using the compactor on Thursdays between 9 am and 5 pm. However, if you do use the compactor on Thursdays, and the compactor is not there, please leave your bagged trash on the platform or stairs and maintenance will put the trash in the compactor when it is returned.

Do your part to Keep GCV Tidy and Green

Trash should be bagged and not just dumped loose from trash cans into the compactor. Problem is that while not bagging sounds eco friendly, fact is people don't always get all of the their trash into the compactor when they dump loose trash in. Instead some of the trash is spilled and blown around.

Bulk trash pickup is on Monday and Saturday, so if you have items that are too large to put in the compactor, please put them by the compactor bay double doors the evening before.

Recycle items should be put in the blue and yellow bins.

  • The Blue bin is for plastic containers, aluminum cans, glass bottles & jars, aluminum foil &  pie pans, drink boxes, and milk & juice cartons.
  • The yellow bin is for newspapers, magazines, catalogs, phonebooks, paper bags, and flattened corrugated cardboard 3' x 3' maximum.

And finally, you can help make Green Cay Village a clean place to live by picking up the occasional trash that finds it's way onto our streets and lawns. A good time to do this is when you are taking your trash to the compactor.

No you didn't put it there. And yes it is someone else's job to pick it up. Still, the choice is yours ... pick it up or look at it and wait until someone else does.
